Here, the main focus is Kanae Sumida, a classmate of Takaki, and her deep crush towards Takaki. This segment is where the light science-fiction elements start to come into play, but unlike turning into convoluted technobabble, it is only used as a metaphor that does not feel overbearing to the plot. Seeing Takaki and Akari spend time and get to enjoy each other's presence surely tugs at your heartstrings, giving the segment incredible sweetness behind these moments without becoming too pretentious in the slightest.
Here, the emotional beats are incredibly heartfelt with a strong focus on telling the relationship in parallel storylines, from the past and present. Covering the same sentimental ground as The Place Promised in Our Early Days, this segment follows Takaki going on a snowbound train journey through rural Japan to meet with Akari one last time before he himself moves to another distant part of Japan. The strongest segment of this film is about the sweet and sentimental childhood bond between Takaki and Akari.
So for the purpose of this review, I will briefly discuss each of these segments and then a couple of other brief pointers about the technical aspects of the film in general. Almost like an anthology film with this unique presentation. These 3 segments cover the aspects of Takaki Tōno's life from the 1990s to present-day Japan and his encounters with love.
In a subversion of his romantic-stylized anime, the film paints a realistic portrait of love, that because of the separation of time and space, love may not conquer all.ĥ Centimeters per Second is a unique anime film because unlike other feature-length films where it tells something from Point A to Z, the film is only an hour-long and stitched together with 3 short segments. Here, instead of a pretentious, convoluted sci-fi adventure that squandered its initial premise and sentimental value, 5 Centimeters per Second is a more refined and grounded romantic drama that focuses on the heartbreaks that humans have to face in terms of love. Makoto Shinkai improved his signature romantic formula in this follow-up from his 2004 debut feature, The Place Promised in Our Early Days.
